I woke up this morning to the light sound of rain on the metal carport roof and I hoped that it would continue – not much showing on the radar.
Jill has been using Wii again and we were interested to see on the TV that a rehab department at a hospital in Melbourne is using the Wii Fit to help with stroke victims. Having been through a rehab program back in 2000 when I had a heart attack I would probably have been more enthusiastic with the exercises if I had a program such as Wii Fit. Jill is really excited about using the program and finds it quite difficult, but keeps trying to go on to the next step.
We have also relieved a symptom of MSA that has been a concern for a reasonable length of time. One of the common symptoms to MSA is sleep apnoea. Jill undertook a sleep study last year and was diagnosed with severe sleep apnoea. She was having 50+ hypopneas / hour and the average would last about 27 seconds. So sleep was not great for either of us. The suggestion was a CPAP machine which delivers a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). We have had one on trial for the past month and I believe it is working. The therapist set us up with a machine and has been back a couple of times to download the performance and Jill’s record. The hypopneas have reduced to 27/hour and she expects this to reduce to about 5 over the next month as Jill becomes more comfortable with wearing the mask at night. The unit we are using is a Fisher Paykel SleepStyle 200 auto series. It delivers pressure on demand with advanced flow based auto adjusting technology. It has a USB smartstick to transfer data to a computer to keep a track on patient’s health. Jill has tried several masks and seems to have settled on a full face type.
A continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine was initially used mainly by patients for the treatment of sleep apnea at home, but now is in widespread use across intensive care units as a form of ventilation. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the upper airway becomes narrow as the muscles relax naturally during sleep. This reduces oxygen in the blood and causes arousal from sleep. The CPAP machine stops this phenomenon by delivering a stream of compressed air via a hose to a nasal pillow, nose mask or full-face mask, splinting the airway (keeping it open under air pressure) so that unobstructed breathing becomes possible, reducing and/or preventing apneas and hypopneas. It is important to understand, however, that it is the air pressure, and not the movement of the air, that prevents the apneas. When the machine is turned on, but prior to the mask being placed on the head, a flow of air comes through the mask. After the mask is placed on the head, it is sealed to the face and the air stops flowing. At this point, it is only the air pressure that accomplishes the desired result. This has the additional benefit of reducing or eliminating the extremely loud snoring that sometimes accompanies sleep apnea
We have had Jake at the vet this week to have a lump which had developed on his side removed. I took him in on Wednesday and picked him up on later that evening. He did look a sorry site with large area of hair removed and those very rough looking stitches. He has only been outside for toilet visits and is slowly improving. His stitches will be removed next Friday.
In our neglected garden we have a positive feature that has just flowered. It is a Paint Brush Lilly. It came from my mum & dads garden. When mum sold she insisted that each of the family take a bulb. This year we have 4 flowers . Haemanthus coccinus – ‘Paintbrush Lily’
This rare bulb originates from South Africa, and has many nicknames other than Paintbrush Lily – such as Witches Paintbrush and OxTongue lilly
The flowers come up first from the bare bulb in the early autumn, followed by two enormous tongue like leaves – hence the OxTongue name!
This bulb is a mainteneance free delight – simply plant and forget! Will happily grow in full or partial sun, isn’t fussy about soil type, and is not bothered by frost.
Bulbs multiply each year – make fabulous pot specimens too.
Mum is back at St Catherine’s after her stay at the Wangaratta Private hospital and is slowly recovering; she has not been down to the lounge for meals yet but says she will be down there this coming week. She had everybody worried.
Macca is almost finished and Jill will be heading for the shower so I had better get moving.
See you next week on the net.
Hi.
I have been looking all over the net to find something about the oxtongue lily as my grandmother grew it but I have now lost it.
Interestingly my step son has just been diagnosed with sleep apnoea and we have been talking about the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine so I found two useful bits of information
regards
Marilyn
